Finished pits - The heart of the workshop equipment

for truck, bus and car

The centre of every workshop is the finishing pit. In the truck workshop it is indispensable. Truck prefabrication pits can be easily integrated into the workshop operation and facilitate the work. This makes it possible to work while standing under very large vehicles. This is not only ergonomic, but also prevents health problems.

In our Infocenter, you can find out everything you need to know about prefabricated pits for trucks - from regulations to laws and permits, but also what you need to consider if you want to set up a prefabricated pit yourself. Click through our extensive information on the subject of workshop pits/assembly pits or test pits.

What are prefabricated pits?

A prefabricated pit for trucks makes it possible to work standing underneath very large vehicles. The truck does not have to be lifted by means of a lifting platform. A prefabricated pit can be easily integrated into the workshop and is a shaft underneath the vehicle. Prefabricated pits are also called maintenance pits or workshop pits.

Even in workshops with a low construction height, work can be carried out efficiently underneath the vehicle. As a manufacturer, we provide you with complete prefabricated pits for trucks with individual equipment.

Exclusive equipment options:

Upgrade your prefabricated pit exclusively:

  • Exhaust air
  • Compressed air
  • Pit jack
  • Fresh oil supply
  • Lighting
  • Articulated play tester
  • Rolling brake tester
  • Electrical installations

Truck repairs and maintenance with the help of prefabricated pits

A prefab pit is ideal when a truck needs to be serviced or repaired. Since transport companies are basically bound to their vehicles, inspections must always be carried out on trucks. One advantage of the prefabricated pit is the speed at which work is done: due to the large area, several mechanics can work on the truck at the same time. This way, haulage companies get their trucks back in the shortest possible time.

Certified prefabricated pits

  • certified by the DIBt with the approval no. Z-38.5-300
  • manufactured according to SLW 60
  • statics tested according to "EUROCODE" standards
  • pits correspond to the accident prevention regulations of the professional association BGR and DGUV
  • correspond to the regulations of AwSV, WHG, TRBS, TRGS
  • manufactured on the basis of our quality management according to ISO guidelines

FAQ about prefabricated pits

Here you get an overview of the most important information of prefabricated pits:

The length of a prefabricated pit can be determined individually. However, when repairing or maintaining a long vehicle, make sure that both pit accesses remain accessible. We therefore recommend 20 metres as a guide value. You are free to choose the height.

Please note the legal regulations that both accesses must be kept open to ensure the safety of the person working. As standard, our prefabricated pits have a depth of 1.39 metres, but these can be customised.
To plan your custom prefabricated pit, you should consider how much space you need to work underneath the vehicle and the height of you and your employees. You should be able to stand comfortably under the vehicle.
Forced ventilation is mandatory for prefabricated pits from a depth of 1.60 metres . It is therefore essential that you take this into account during construction.

A prefabricated pit can be equipped individually, taking into account the size of the site. You can use a mobile pit jack, but should also have a storage space or recess for it. You can increase the width of the prefabricated pit for compressed air, lighting and supply lines. This will create more space.
Nevertheless, certain regulations apply when equipping a prefabricated pit:

  • Two access points required
  • An emergency exit is only permitted under certain guidelines
  • Pit lighting must not protrude into the pit
  • Suitable pump sump must be available

As a WHG-certified specialist company, we are proud to be able to offer you the prefabricated pit including complete equipment.

Covers exist for prefabricated pits, as they must always be covered for safety reasons. Roller covers are mostly used when prefabricated pits are not needed for a longer period of time. This allows you to continue working in the workshop and prevent accidents at work. Depending on the location, barrier chains and standpipes can also be used to block the prefabricated pits. However, in order to cover the entire prefabricated pit , plates, gratings and planks are suitable. Take into account the stability and that the pits are at ground level. This way, heavy vehicles can still drive over the pit area.

In the first step, we present our prefabricated pits free of charge with our DEMO service. We provide you with specialist advice and answer all your questions about the prefabricated pit. Subsequently, we design your individual prefabricated pit with the help of our 3D pit configurator and present it to you. You can make the preparations for the installation or hand over the construction management to us. Our HDC prefabricated pit team installs all the additional fittings and hands over the prefabricated pit ready for use.

A pit jack can also lift heavy vehicles and is available floor-running or suspended. The extra feature "floor-running pit jack" is installed in a rail system in advance so that it can act as a running surface. At the same time, the rail system makes the floor-running pit lift run more easily.

Prefabricated pits are also known as assembly pits, workshop pits or maintenance pits. They all serve the same purpose: they make it easy to work under a truck, car or bus.

The most important thing about a pit surround is its safety and load-bearing capacity, so that it can be driven over at any time without any problems. If you can leave the finished pit in the direction of travel, then you may not need a wheel deflector.

In order to be able to use the prefabricated pit as a running track for the chassis of the pit lifter, various static rules should be implemented with regard to the size and spacing of the profiles.

Many hobby mechanics dream of having their own lifting platform in the garage, with which vehicles can be easily lifted. However, in the case of garages it usually fails due to the lack of ceiling height or the lack of load-bearing capacity of the floor. A solution to this problem is a prefabricated pit. It is being installed more and more in the private sector, which on the one hand saves a lot of space and on the other hand can be optimally concealed in order to carry out further work in the garage.

To install a prefabricated pit in your garage, you need a building permit. Furthermore, we recommend that you hire a structural engineer to do the necessary static calculations for you.

Since water damage can occur again and again, we offer you a concrete white tub for safety. The concrete tub is closed and corresponds to the entire criteria of durable buildings, since it also includes the room climatic and special building-physical situation. No moisture can penetrate from the outside, as the concrete is impermeable to water.

You can build a prefabricated pit according to your individual ideas. However, ask yourself the following questions in advance:

  • How long and high is the vehicle you want to lift?
  • How tall are you yourself?

You should be able to work comfortably in the prefabricated pit, so the width should not be too narrow. The height of the prefabricated pit also plays a role: the prefabricated pit must be high enough so that you can work in an upright position without any restrictions. This will help you avoid health problems such as back pain.

Ensure safety with a prefabricated pit in the private area as well. The base plate should be stable and the entire prefabricated pit should be covered when not in use. Also a technical ventilation (exhaust air) should be installed, because e.g. petrol produces exhaust gases in connection with sparking, which can be harmful to health. These exhaust gases are extracted by the ventilation. As lighting is necessary for working in a prefabricated pit, fluorescent tubes are particularly suitable, as they are inserted in the pit wall and thus remain protected.

Realize your dream of your own prefabricated pit by combining your wishes with the static requirements.

The warranty for HDC prefabricated pits is 24 months. The only difference is the warranty for electrical or wear parts: Here it is 12 months. To ensure that prefabricated pits remain durable and long-lasting, we carry out regular cleaning and maintenance.

Since a joint play tester checks the joint play, technical faults such as defective axle parts can be detected at an early stage.
